InNOVAcorp has announced the finalists in its I-3 Technology Start-Up Competition. In each of the five geographic zones, three finalists are competing for first and second place award packages, worth $100,000 and $40,000 respectively, made up of cash and in-kind business building services. The companies will pitch their start-up business plans to the I-3 judging panels in mid January. “The top 15 companies, each with their own unique and high potential offering, reflect the high level of innovation happening across Nova Scotia,” says Dan MacDonald, president and CEO of InNOVAcorp. “It’s been fascinating to sit with the 20 highly capable private sector judges across the province and hear the perspectives of others around the table.” The three finalists in each zone were chosen from among five semi-finalists selected from the 133 original submissions from across Nova Scotia. Finalists were chosen based on a detailed business plan submission. The I-3 competition finalists are: Zone 1 (Pictou, Cumberland, Colchester, Antigonish and Guysborough counties): • LST Energy Inc. of Pictou was formed by Jim Trussler, Gus Swanson and Philip Landry and is marketing an innovative biomass furnace that can efficiently burn grass/hay-based pellets. It’s designed for both residential and industrial applications. • Performance Genomics Inc. of Truro was formed by Donald Crober to produce a DNA-based predictor of reproductive performance that has application in livestock, including dairy cattle. • X-Flux Environmental Technologies Inc. of Antigonish was formed by David Risk to promote real-time monitoring of carbon dioxide emissions from underground carbon capture and storage facilities. Zone 2 (Lunenburg, Queens, Shelburne and Yarmouth counties): • Gateway Geomatics of Lunenburg was formed by Jeff McKenna to market a software tool for publishing spatial information to the Internet using the Open Source MapServer Product, focused on Microsoft Windows users. • Ocean Leader Fisheries Ltd. of Lower Wedgeport was formed by Milton LeBlanc and Bruce LeBlanc to develop an anti-inflammatory sea cucumber extract for the companion pet market. • Xona Games of Yarmouth was formed by Matthew Doucette and Jason Doucette and has become an award-winning XBOX 360 game developer. Zone 3 (Digby, Annapolis, Kings and Hants counties): • Clare Machine Works Ltd. of Meteghan Centre was formed by Vince Stuart to promote an innovative mobile approach to refurbishing high value oil and gas industry drilling components. • Compilr of Weymouth was formed by Patrick Hankinson to develop a mass market software code development collaboration and compiler system. • Fireworks FX Inc./Solar Flare Inc. of Grand Pre was formed by Fred Wade to launch an electric ignition system for fireworks displays that solves serious safety-related issues. Zone 4 (Halifax Regional Municipality): • Carbon Sense Solutions Inc. was formed by Robert Niven to market his advanced concrete curing technology, which improves production economics and material properties, and reduces green house gases. • TetherBerry was started by Tim Burke and Stephen Hankinson to promote a mobile connectivity solution for laptops via BlackBerries and other smartphones. • VoIP Solutions was formed by Peter Woodford, Eamonn Oldham and Larry Hicks to provide an enhanced 911 solution for Voice over IP (VoIP) enabled telephones, which ensures emergency calls are routed to the appropriate public safety access point. Zone 5 (Cape Breton Regional Municipality and Victoria, Inverness and Richmond counties): • Billdidit Inc. of Port Hawkesbury was formed by Joe Menchefski and Bill Coady to provide music industry accessories, including the Coady Clutch – the world’s first passive hi-hat drop clutch that allows drummers to engage and disengage their hi-hats during live performances. • Health Tech Outcomes of New Waterford was formed by Corrine McIsaac and Charley Chiasson and is an e-health business process management company, specializing in assisting health care organizations improve their quality of patient care while reducing costs in areas such as chronic disease management. • Prescribed Solutions Consulting Inc. of Sydney was formed by Ed Fedora and Paul Graham to promote their drug benefits management program. InNOVAcorp ran a pilot I-3 competition in Cape Breton in 2006 and its first provincial competition in 2007, and is currently in the middle of its second provincial competition. In less than four years, the competition has received a remarkable 270 start-up company submissions, reflecting the increasingly high level of entrepreneurship happening across Nova Scotia. The majority of the submissions fall into the high growth information technology, advanced manufacturing, life sciences and clean technology industry sectors. The majority of submissions to this year’s competition are in the prototype or market stage of development. InNOVAcorp has begun the process of calling each individual entrant and providing constructive feedback on how they might best move forward with their initiative. After the pitch round of the competition, the five first place winners from each zone will compete for the provincial award of $100,000 in seed investment from InNOVAcorp’s HPi™ Microfund.
