EastLink to provide mobile competition in Maritimes

EastLink will launch wireless services in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island next year, the company said Friday.

Bragg Communications, the owner of the cable, telephone and Internet provider, won spectrum licences in the 2008 Advanced Wireless Spectrum auction but hasn’t yet put them to use with wireless service.

Following the auction, Eastlink co-CEO Lee Bragg said he wanted to launch a competitive mobile phone service in Atlantic Canada, Ontario and Grand Prairie, Alta.—the regions where it won spectrum licences—within a year.

Spokeswoman Jill Laing told the Halifax Chronicle Herald that she expects the launch of EastLink’s “world-class wireless network” next year to bring more competitive choice to the wireless market in the region, the same way EastLink’s telephone service did.

Virgin Mobile opened its first flagship store in Atlantic Canada in Halifax last week, and many expect Wind Mobile to also offer service in the region soon.
